Games could save the pub

BRITISH pubs - closing at record rates in a harsh economic climate - could be saved by reviving traditional games such as skittles and darts, according to a report.

Such games have disappeared from many pubs in favour of gaming machines, the report said. But bringing them back could reverse the five-year decline in the number of young adults regularly visiting their locals, it added.

The report, by the Campaign for Real Ale (Camra), said the number of people aged 18 to 24 who are regular pub-goers has dropped by up to 11 percent since 2006.

A Camra survey found 49 percent of youngsters who had heard of a traditional pub game are very likely or quite likely to visit pubs more often if these free games were available.

Camra chairman Colin Valentine said "a disturbing" 25 pubs closed every week, adding: "The research highlighted that one fun way of attracting 18 to 24-year-olds back could be to offer free traditional pub games."
