Garbage Crisis Sparks Emergency Talks In Italy
ITALIAN Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi held emergency talks on the rapidly escalating Naples garbage crisis yesterday after more clashes between police and demonstrators.
At least 20 police were injured on Thursday and there was further violence overnight as the problem of waste disposal in Italy's third largest city intensified.
"The government is very concerned by this," Community Affairs Minister Andrea Ronchi said after the meeting began. "The ... talks will analyze the situation."
Police in riot gear confronted around 2,000 demonstrators, who threw stones, marbles and firecrackers and used tree trunks to block access to a dump near Terzigno, the town at the center of the crisis.
Meanwhile, London's fire brigade will only be responding to serious incidents today as firefighters prepare to hold an eight-hour strike in the British capital, officials said.
