Gays, lesbians face wide harassment in EU
THE EU's fundamental rights agency says lesbians, gays, bisexuals and transsexuals face widespread harassment, bullying and discrimination across Europe.
The agency says harassment and discrimination happens "in all areas of social life," from schools to the workplace.
Agency Director Morten Kjaerum says the investigation also found violent attacks against gays and lesbians.
However, he says, "very few incidents" are reported to police, meaning hate crimes go unpunished.
Kjaerum appealed to the 27 EU nations to strengthen equality legislation, to improve the recording of hate crimes and "to train police accordingly."
The agency, which presented its report Tuesday, also recommended awareness campaigns to promote diversity and nondiscrimination.
