German Chancellor visits Afghanistan
CHANCELLOR Angela Merkel paid an unannounced visit to northern Kunduz province today and visited German troops stationed there.
The German Chancellor, according to local Afghan officials, during her stay in Kunduz would pay a visit to the militancy-hit Chardara district and inaugurate the work for construction of a road there to connect northern part of the district to southern part.
More than 4,500 German troops have been stationed in Afghanistan, with majority of them in Kunduz province within the framework of NATO-led International Security Assistance Force ( ISAF) to help stabilize security there.
Earlier, on December 14 German Defense Minister Karl Theodor Zu Guttenberg toured Kunduz province and visited his soldiers based there.
Foreign dignitaries often visit Afghanistan without prior announcement due to security reasons.
