Greenland takes step to self-rule
GREENLAND celebrated the expansion of its independence from Denmark on its national day yesterday. Residents of the giant Arctic island saw the change as a step toward self-rule.
Greenland voters decided in a November referendum to expand their home rule agreement with Denmark by taking control of the police and the courts and making Greenlandic - an Inuit tongue - the official language. Denmark still has the final say in defense and foreign-policy matters.
