Gunman releases Wisconsin students unharmed

A gunman released unharmed all 23 students and a teacher held hostage for more than four hours during a standoff with police at a Marinette, Wisconsin, high school yesterday, an emergency management official said.
Marinette County Emergency Management Director Eric Burmeister said an unidentified student armed with a loaded handgun allowed the students to go unharmed.

The fate of the gunman was not immediately known.

The armed student earlier in the day took a class of 23 high school students and the teacher hostage at the school and initially refused to negotiate with police. He then released five of the students and later all those remaining.

Police were dispatched to the Marinette high school after a call at 3:48 pm local time.

Emergency personnel converged on the scene and the school was surrounded and the perimeter secured, officials said.

The high school has about 800 students, according to its web site.

Marinette is about 50 miles north of Green Bay, Wisconsin.
