Gunshots heard in Tahrir Square, casualties reported
GUNSHOTS were heard in Tahrir Square in downtown Cairo early today and casualties were reported, Al-Jazeera said.
Cracks of gunfire were clearly heard in the square, where large crowds of protestors still gathered to press ahead with their demand for President Hosni Mubarak's stepdown, live video footage showed.
Unconfirmed reports said at least one person was killed and 10 others wounded from bullets, citing a doctor at the scene.
There is no way to confirm who fired the shots at present. Clashes between supporters of Mubarak and anti-government protesters yesterday have killed at least three people and wounded some 600 hundred.
Al-Jazeera reports said the shooting was from a corner near the square and a tank parked nearby drove towards the direction after the shooting erupted.
Protests turned violent in the last few hours after a week of peaceful gathering. Kicking, beating, shoving, burning, and verbal fights started as pro- and anti-Mubarak protesters encountered in Tahrir Square, epicenter of the demonstration.
Some of Mubarak's supporters pledged to "liberate Tahrir square with blood," while others said they didn't want violence.
Mubarak, 82, announced Tuesday that he would not seek re-election for the post he has held since 1981.
