Hijacked German cargo ship released off Somalia
THE German Foreign Ministry says Somali pirates who captured a German-owned cargo ship in May in the Gulf of Aden have released it and the crew is unharmed.
A ministry spokesman said today the MV Victoria and its 11 Romanian crewmembers were released safely. He gave no further information. He spoke on condition of anonymity in line with departmental policy.
The pirates seized the Victoria on May 5. Another German cargo ship, the Hansa Stavanger which was hijacked in April with 24 men aboard, is still under the control of pirates.
The Gulf of Aden, which is shared by Somalia and Yemen, connects the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean and forms one of the world's busiest shipping lanes.
