Hollywood actors approve new commercials deal

HOLLYWOOD'S two actors' unions said yesterday their members overwhelmingly approved contract deals with advertisers, just days after voting began on a separate pact involving the Screen Actors Guild and the Hollywood studios.

In a joint statement, SAG and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists said the three-year deals would generate more than US$108 million in member earnings. The agreements for each union cover performers working in commercials made for and reused on television, radio, the Internet and new media.

The two unions, representing 132,000 members, began negotiations with the Joint Policy Committee of the American Association of Advertising Agencies in February and reached a deal in New York on April 1. The vote was 93.84 percent in favor of the new agreements, the statement said.

SAG mailed out ballots on Tuesday for a crucial vote on a tentative deal with the studios. Industry experts say they expect moderates within the bitterly divided union to win the simple majority they need to approve the proposal, which would replace a contract that expired last June. Poll results are expected to be announced on June 9.
