Hostage drama school reopens
TEACHERS and counselors prepared reassurances of safety and support as Marinette High School in Wisconsin in the United States reopened yesterday - a day after a student who had held a class hostage for hours died from the gunshot he inflicted on himself as police approached.
Sam Hengel brought two handguns into a Monday afternoon class and held about two dozen students and his teacher for around six hours. The standoff ended when the 15-year-old shot himself.
All the hostages escaped unharmed, but Hengel died on Tuesday.
Officials said grief counselors would be there for any students who wished to talk.
Hengel's family said in a statement that they had seen "no indicators" from the teen who loved "anything that included his family and the outdoors" to make them think something was wrong.
