India confirms first A/H1N1 flu case

A 23-YEAR-OLD man, who arrived at the central Indian city of Hyderabad airport from the United States, has been found to be the first influenza A H1N1 case in India, the Health Ministry said today.

The unidentified patient flew Emirates Airline from New York to Hyderabad via Dubai. He reached India Wednesday morning and was quarantined after he was found to be suffering from fever, said the ministry.

"He was shifted to the identified isolation facility under strict infection control. His samples have tested positive for influenza A H1N1," said the health ministry statement.

The person is being treated with anti-influenza drugs Oseltamivir and Afebrile, said the ministry, adding that all the passengers who came in contact with the infected person are also being monitored.

Over the past several weeks, India had tested negative more than 40 suspected cases of H1N1 flu.
