India rocked by report of rapes of 2 foreigners
MORE reports of sexual violence rocked India as police said yesterday they had arrested a man accused of raping an Irish woman who volunteered at a children's charity as officers searched for three men accused of gang-raping an American tourist in a resort town.
A local businessman charged with attacking the Irish woman in the city of Kolkata was due in court, officials said.
The man attended a party the woman hosted to celebrate her 21st birthday on Friday, officials said. She later went to the man's house where she drank a cup of tea and passed out, then she was raped, officials said.
On Tuesday, police said the American woman was gang-raped in the northern Indian resort town of Manali.
Three men picked her up in a truck while she was hitchhiking, then drove her 16 or 17 kilometers to a secluded spot and raped her, police officer Sher Singh said. No arrests had been made, Singh said.
She was visiting friends and had been unable to find a taxi home, police said.
After the attack, the woman was taken to a local hospital for preliminary tests before being taken back to her guest house.
"Her condition is stable and she is accompanied by two women constables. All medical help has been given, and the doctors have been taking care of her," police said.
Sex crimes are common in India. The National Crime Records Bureau says more than 24,200 rapes were reported across the country in 2011 - about one every 20 minutes.
"Women should observe stringent security precautions, including avoiding use of public transport after dark without the company of known and trustworthy companions," according to a US State Department travel advisory for India.
The fatal gang-rape of an Indian student in New Delhi in December sparked demands for better protection for women.
