India tries backdoor talks with fasting yoga guru

AS India's anti-graft yoga guru Baba Ramdev continued his fast for the 8th consecutive day in spite of being shifted to the hospital, the government has asked mediators to convince him to end fast, said official sources today.
The government has refused to come to the talking table for direct talks, but seems to be using other channels to negotiate with the yoga guru.
According to reliable sources, Law Minister Veerappa Moily has asked religious guru Sri Ravishankar to convince Ramdev to give up his fast.
Sources say the government is open to anyone who wishes to mediate and get Ramdev to end the fast.
This comes after activist Swami Agnivesh met Congress' key troubleshooter Pranab Mukherjee and offered to mediate. Pranab Mukherjee had also met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and briefed him on the matter.
With backdoor negotiations gaining momentum, veteran congress leader N.D. Tewari too met Ramdev asking him to call off fast.
Earlier, the Congress party had washed its hands off Ramdev's health, saying that the Uttarakhand state government, where the Bharatiya Janata Party is in power, is responsible and not the Center.
Ramdev was forcibly removed from the Indian capital last weekend after he staged a massive protest against corruption in government.
