Indian gov't releases Assamese separatist leader
The Indian government has released the head of United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), Arabinda Rajkhowa, from jail in the northeastern state of Assam, more than one year after he was arrested for heading the banned separatist group, said official sources today.
The 54-year-old Rajkhowa, granted bail on Thursday by a special court after the Assam government filed no objection to facilitate peace talks, was released from Guwahati Central Jail yesterday, sources said.
Rajkhowa said he was ready for talks with the government after his release, according to local media report.
Rajkhowa will now be allowed to go home after over 30 years of underground life, following the formation of ULFA in 1979.
He was arrested after being extradited by Bangladesh in November 2009.
ULFA sought to establish a sovereign Assam nation via an armed struggle.
The Indian government banned it in 1990 and classified it as a terrorist group.
