Indian passenger train survives new track blast

A passenger train narrowly escaped derailment at wee hours this morning in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu as a section of railway track was blown up with improvised explosive device, said police.

"Passengers of the Tiruchirapalli-Chennai Rockfort Express, which was coming from the town of Trichy, had a narrow escape after a three-feet-deep crater, possibly caused by a bomb blast, was spotted at 2:30am. The train driver was alerted and he applied emergency brakes to bring the train to a halt," said a police official in the Tamil Nadu capital Chennai.

The incident disrupted train services in southern India for over eight hours, but now the services have been restored, the official said.

The incident took place near Villupram of the state but no one was killed or injured.

Police have found posters at the scene placed by people sympathetic to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) protesting the visit by Sri Lankan President Mahindra Rajapakse to India earlier this week, according to local TV channel Times Now.

The LTTE supporters in Tamil Nadu said thousands of Tamil civilians were killed by Sri Lankan government forces when they defeated the LTTE in northern Sri Lanka last year.

The train stopped about 60 meters away from the damaged spot of the track after receiving a warning about the blast near Perani station, 160 km from Chennai, said the Indo-Asian News Service.

About 150 people were killed when a passenger train derailed on May 28 in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal before being hit by a cargo train.

Police said the extreme left-wing Naxal rebels could be behind the sabotage of the railway track which caused the derailment.
