Inquiry follows chopper crash

US officials are investigating how a tourist helicopter hit a mountain ridge on Hawaii's Molokai island, killing the pilot and four tourists.

The aircraft was touring West Maui and Molokai when it went down near an elementary school yesterday, authorities said. Firefighters recovered four bodies and the fifth was found under the wreckage.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopters owner David Chevalier said: "We are grieved for our pilot as well as the passengers. Something like this cannot be more devastating to us."

The Honolulu Star-Advertiser claimed the passengers were from Pennsylvania and Ontario, Canada. It said at least two of the passengers were newlyweds.

Tour helicopters have come under greater safety scrutiny after a crash in Manhattan last month. Some lawmakers have called for a ban on tourist flights by privately-owned aircraft in Manhattan.
