Int'l Geography Festival kicks off in France
THE International Geography Festival kicked off on Friday in France's Saint-Dié-des-Vosges, about 70 kilometers to the southwest of Strasbourg.
The theme for the 25th edition of the festival is "To Inhabit the Earth", and the festival will feature conferences and events designed to reinvestigate what it means to inhabit and co-inhabit the planet in social, political, and environmental terms.
The guests of honor for this year are the British Isles, with the organizers having chosen to invite a geographical territory rather than an individual nation.
A series of conferences and debates will explore the unique socio-political questions that arise from the dynamic regions of England, Scotland, Ireland, and Wales and the two states of the Republic of Ireland and the United Kingdom.
Programs are also planned to introduce visitors to British culture, including a Gastronomic Salon, where guests can sample authentic British cuisine for the duration of the events.
Educational workshops will also be held, and both fictional and documentary films related to geographical themes will be shown from filmmakers around the world.
The annual festival, which started in 1990, was established to welcome an international gathering of geographers, cartographers, writers and other specialists to discuss current topics in geographical studies.
As the home for the festival since its inauguration, Saint-Dié-des-Vosges is a significant historical site for geographers, despite its small population of only 23,000 people.
The first known appearance of the word "America" occurred there in April of 1507 when the name was printed in world map by German cartographer Martin Waldseemuller. The United States Library of Congress bought the only complete copy in existence for US$10 million in 2003.
The festival runs from Friday until Sunday, and expects to welcome between 30,000 and 40,000 visitors. Over 350 events have been planned, ranging from scientific debates, to presentations of new geographical technology, to informal coffee shop meetings.
