Iodine Sent To Evacuation Centers To Help Protect Against Radiation Cancer
JAPAN has provided 230,000 units of stable iodine to evacuation centers as a precautionary measure in the country's nuclear emergency, the United Nations atomic watchdog said yesterday.
The International Atomic Energy Agency, citing information it had received from Japanese authorities, said that about 185,000 residents in areas near the nuclear power plants affected by Friday's earthquake had been evacuated by Sunday.
Medical experts say that iodine can be used to help protect against cases of thyroid cancer resulting from radioactive exposure in the event of a nuclear accident.
