Iraq PM rejects foreign ground troops
IRAQ’S new prime minister said yesterday that foreign ground troops are neither necessary nor wanted in his country’s fight against the Islamic State group, flatly rejecting the idea a day after the top US general recommended that American forces may be needed if current efforts to combat the extremists fail.
Haider al-Abadi said that US airstrikes have been helpful in the country’s efforts to roll back the Sunni militant group, but stressed that putting foreign boots on the ground “is out of the question.”
“Not only is it not necessary, we don’t want them. We won’t allow them. Full stop.”
