Israel to impose 9-day lockdown on West Bank

ISRAELI security forces will impose a nine-day general closure on the West Bank during the Jewish Passover holiday, Israeli army said today.

Following orders of Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak, the lockdown will begin tonight's midnight and is scheduled to be lifted on April 6, said a statement of Israel Defense Forces (IDF).

The closure's lifting will be carried out after assessments of security situations, said IDF.

Throughout the nine days, passage of humanitarian aid, as well as doctors, lawyers and other professional groups will be authorized by Israeli civil authorities.

The Jewish holiday of Passover, which marks Hebrew's escape from enslavement in Egypt, will take place this year from sunset of March 29 to April 6.

IDF sealed off the West Bank for five days earlier this month, in the wake of tensions between the Palestinians and Israel following the latter's approval of a housing program in East Jerusalem.

Israeli soldiers clashed with Arab protestors during the closure, causing injuries on both sides.
