Italian former official sentenced to 7 years links to Mafia
ITALIAN Senator and former governor of Sicily Salvatore Cuffaro was sentenced yesterday to 7 years in prison for Mafia linkages and revelation of investigative secrets.
The sentence issued by Italy's Supreme Court was final. Cuffaro was then arrested and taken to Rome's central prison of Rebibbia.
The verdict is indeed ground-breaking. After several years of long trials and appeals Cuffaro was found guilty of favoring the Sicilian Mafia, known as Cosa Nostra, when he was governor of the region in winning tenders for the construction of hospitals and private clinics.
According to the judges, the former governor was behind all the decisions linked to the regional medical sector new projects. Other hospital managers were also arrested with him.
Cuffaro was also found guilty of revealing secret information regarding a probe launched several years ago on a "suspected spy game" inside Sicily's central tribunal.
Cuffaro spent the entire morning praying, waiting for the sentence. Talking to state television Rai, he said he respected the judges' final decision and that it was correct to face the sentence which confined him to prison.
He said his penalty is a lesson that "I leave as an example to my children".
