Japan lifts tsunami warning, revises quake magnitude

A tsunami alert was lifted as the magnitude of a strong aftershock was revised to 7.0 from preliminary 7.1, according to Japan Meteorological Agency today.

The aftershock jolted eastern, northeastern parts of Japan at 5: 16 pm local time (0816 GMT) today and a tsunami warning was issued afterward.

The epicenter, with depth of 10 km, was in Hamadori of Fukushima Prefecture. Swaying was strongly felt in buildings in Tokyo, some 200 km south of Hamadori.

Two-meter tsunami waves are expected to hit the Pacific coast in Ibaraki Prefecture soon, the agency said, urging people to evacuate to higher locations.

Nuclear power stations in Ibaraki Prefecture were normal after the quake, operator said.

But there have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The aftershock came as Japan marked the one-month anniversary of the massive quake and tsunami that have left 13,116 people dead and 14,377 others unaccounted for by 10:00 a.m. local time (0100 GMT) today.

The operator of the crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant said the latest quake briefly cut power but it was quickly restored.

A 7.1-magnitude aftershock struck off the Pacific coast of Japan on April 7.
