Japan opposes China's Diaoyu map bid at UN
THE Japanese government has filed an objection at the United Nations over a maritime map of the Diaoyu Islands sent by China earlier this month, local media said today.
A document asserting Japan's claim to the "Senkaku Islands" ( Diaoyu Island and its affiliated islets) has been sent to the UN, according to Foreign Ministry officials, public broadcaster NHK reported.
On September 13, China's Permanent Representative to the UN Li Baodong met with UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, and filed a copy of a maritime chart announced by the Chinese government of the names and coordinates of 17 base points in the Diaoyu Islands with the international organization.
Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is scheduled to give a speech at the UN General Assembly tomorrow, in which he is expected to push for what he called the principle of rule of law in tackling territorial issues.
Japan is also engaged in a territorial row with South Korea over a set of small islands.
