JAPANESE Prime Minister Naoto Kan admitted today that his political fund management body had accepted donation from a South Korean resident in Japan.
Speaking at the House of Councilors Budget Committee, Kan said that he was not aware the donor was a South Korean resident in Japan.
"Once I have confirmed the person to be of foreign nationality, I will return the money in full," Kan told the upper house lawmakers.
The premier said that he will not resign over the donation issue.
Kan's admission of receiving donation from a foreign national came after Foreign Minister Seiji Maehara resigned on Sunday over donation from a South Korean resident in Japan.
The Political Funds Control Law prohibits politicians from accepting donation from foreigners or foreign entities to prevent Japanese politics and elections from being influenced by foreign people, organizations or governments.
The Asahi Shimbun reported today that Kan's fund body had received a total of 1.04 million yen (US$12,530) in donation between 2006 and 2009 from a South Korean resident in Japan, who was a former board member of a South Korean-affiliated financial institution.
