Japanese PM's Salary To Be Cut By 30%
JAPAN plans to cut its prime minister's pay by 30 percent and civil servants' salaries by 5 to 10 percent to help pay for the reconstruction of areas devastated by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.
The measure, adopted by Japan's cabinet but still requiring parliamentary approval, would affect most of the central government's 543,000 employees, an official at the Ministry of Internal Affairs said, although members of the military would be exempt for the first six months.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan is paid 2,060,000 yen (US$25,465) a month. A civil servant's starting salary is typically around US$2,200 a month.
