Japanese emperor extends hospital stay

JAPAN'S Emperor Akihito is to remain in hospital, the palace said today, extending his treatment for bronchitis into a second week.

The 77-year-old's temperature rose over the weekend and his cough continued, the Imperial Household Agency said.

"It has been decided that hospitalisation is to continue for a little longer," a statement said.

The decision will force Akihito to miss a welcome ceremony for the newlywed royal couple from Bhutan, who will visit Japan this week.

It will be the first time Akihito has missed a meeting with a state guest in more than two decades on the throne.

Akihito was admitted to the University of Tokyo Hospital on November 6 for fever and symptoms of bronchitis.

The palace later said he would be discharged on November 11, but that date was subsequently pushed back as he failed to recover.

Akihito, who acceded to the throne in 1989 following the death of his father Emperor Hirohito, underwent surgery for prostate cancer in 2003.

As the titular head of state in Japan, he plays a largely ceremonial role but is held in deep respect by many Japanese.
