Japanese fakes death for insurance cash
A JAPANESE man accused of forging his own death certificate to collect millions of dollars in insurance payments is being held in Thailand on an immigration violation pending other possible charges, Thai police said yesterday.
Arrested in his Thai girlfriend's apartment on Thursday, Ichiro Ogushi, 35, had been on the run since immigration authorities discovered that a death certificate presented to the Japanese Embassy was counterfeited, said police Major General Pongdech Chaiyaprawat.
According to the police account, after his trading firm in Japan ran into trouble, Ogushi and his colleagues decided to fake his death for insurance compensation worth 500 million yen (US$5.8 million).
Police said Ogushi confessed to making a fake death certificate in Thailand, where he arrived in November, and then presenting the certificate and ashes he procured from a cemetery to the Japanese Embassy in Bangkok through a former associate.
His plan foundered after the Japanese Embassy contacted Thailand's Immigration Police for verification and their records showed Ogushi had recently taken a number of trips both within Thailand and to neighboring countries, Pongdech said.
Thai investigators headed to the red-light district in Bangkok and were able to find the address of Ogushi's Thai girlfriend. Ogushi was discovered there -- alive.
