Japan's Edano denies PM Kan to stay into next year
JAPAN'S top government spokesman today denied that unpopular Prime Minister Naoto Kan intended to stay in office into next year.
The ruling party has resumed its bickering after Kan hinted he wanted to keep his job beyond this year, angering rivals who had voted down a no-confidence motion in return for what they saw as a promise he would quit much sooner.
Japanese media quoted Chief Cabinet Secretary Yukio Edano saying on a TV programme that Kan did not intend to stay in power "that long."
Kan survived the no-confidence motion on Thursday but squabbling quickly resurfaced after his comments suggested he wanted to stay on until damaged reactors at the disabled Fukushima nuclear plant achieved a stable "cold shutdown", a process expected to take at least until January and probably longer.
