Kenyan minister resigns post

KENYA'S Industrialisation Minister Henry Kosgey resigned yesterday after the country's anti-corruption watchdog said he should be charged over a scam involving imports of untaxed vehicles.

Kosgey's departure, the second cabinet member to quit in three months, was a sign that Kenya's fight against corruption is becoming more intense.

Kosgey was also named by the International Criminal Court last month as one of six people possibly behind ethnic bloodletting that killed about 1,300 people after a disputed election in 2007.

The Kenya Anti-Corruption Commission alleged that Kosgey granted exemptions for the importation of hundreds of cars older than the eight-year legal limit and waived taxes for them. He has denied wrongdoing.

Weak laws have hampered the KACC's anti-corruption battle, analysts say, but Kenya's new constitution will give it the power to arrest and prosecute suspects.

No Kenyan minister has ever been convicted of corruption.
