Kidnapped Chinese-Filipino businessman rescued in Philippines

GERALD Lao Tiu, 34 years old, was abducted by a group of armed men in front of his residence in Quezon City, Metro Manila. The kidnappers demanded a ransom of 10 million pesos (US$210,000) from Tiu' family.

Isagani Nerez, chief of the Philippine Police Anti-Crime and Emergency Response, said that the information about the abduction was immediately reported by witnesses and the police was able to pinpoint the safe house of the kidnappers in Rizal province, on the east of Manila.

The police launched the operation and killed one suspect on the spot.

According to Nerez, the group responsible for the kidnapping is a newly-organized syndicate composed of about eight members and believed to be led by a former police officer. The same group is also believed responsible in the two other recent kidnapping cases this year.

Early today, the police killed four other suspected members of the kidnapping gang in a shoot-out at a checkpoint in Metro Manila. Policemen found some personal belongings of Tiu, including ATM cards and credit cards, in the gang's car.
