Koreas to work on six-party talks
TOP nuclear envoys of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Republic of Korea met in Bali, Indonesia, on Friday and agreed to work to resume stalled six-party talks as soon as possible.
The bilateral meeting between DPRK's Ri Yong-ho and Republic of Korea's Wi Sung-lac was held on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum. It was aimed at implementing the follow-up actions of the Joint Statement of the Fourth Round of the Six-Party Talks, Ri, also vice foreign minister of his country, told reporters.
The meeting, which lasted for more than one hour, was conducted in a "friendly and frank" manner, he said. The South Korean envoy also said that the meeting was "friendly and constructive," adding that the two nuclear envoys touched upon many issues but the focus was on denuclearization.
Wi said the two sides made clear their own stance and both would make efforts to hold consultations on denuclearization and pave the way for the resumption of stalled talks.
DPRK's Foreign Minister Pak Ui-chun, who is in Bali to attend the ASEAN Regional Forum, confirmed earlier in the day that Ri had been appointed the DPRK's chief envoy to the six-party talks.
The six-party talks on nuclear issues, involving the DPRK, South Korea, China, the United States, Japan and Russia, have been stalled since late 2008.
