Kyrgyz party reshuffles ahead of election
A NUMBER of Kyrgyz political organizations that had been the backbone of the former opposition United People's Movement announced a reshuffling and the formation of a new party yesterday.
The BEK party will be more a party of youth after a reshuffling and the joining of several other parties, said Azimbek Beknazarov, leader of the new party and deputy prime minister of the interim government.
The United People's Movement, which was formed in December 2008 and which played a leading role in the campaign that led to the ouster of former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev, has been disbanded, Beknazarov said.
Beknazarov said he will head the new party to run in parliamentary elections slated for Oct. 10.
Kyrgyzstan held a referendum last month to adopt a new constitution that makes the country a parliamentary republic. Interim leader Roza Otunbayeva has pledged parliamentary elections in October.
