Landslides kill dozens in Uganda villages

A UGANDAN official said landslides in a mountain region have buried three villages and killed at least 70 people, with 250 still missing.

District chairman Wilson Watira said the overnight landslides barreled into three villages. By late yesterday officials had recovered 70 bodies but hundreds more people were missing.

The landslides occurred 275 kilometers east of the capital, Kampala, near Bududa. The area has long suffered from landslides.

Police and army forces were working to recover bodies in the remote villages.

One survivor said he was at a church service when the rains began.

"All of a sudden the church collapsed. Mud covered the whole place. Five people seated next to me died. I only survived because my head was above the mud," James Kasawi, 20, said from a hospital, where he was recovering from a broken leg and arm.
