Lawyer says Mubarak can be released
AN Egyptian prosecutor yesterday allowed for Hosni Mubarak to be released, his lawyer said, after an appeals court acquitted the ex-president of involvement in the killing of protesters during a 2011 uprising.
“He can go home now when the doctors decide he is able to,” Farid al-Deeb said, adding that Mubarak is banned from leaving Egypt pending an ongoing graft investigation. The 88-year-old has been in detention at a military hospital in Cairo for most of the time since his arrest in 2011.
On March 2, a court acquitted him of involvement in the killing of protesters during the revolt that toppled him. About 850 people died as police clashed with demonstrators.
Prosecutors levelled various charges following Mubarak’s February 2011 resignation.
He was sentenced to life in 2012, but a retrial later dismissed the charges.
Last year, an appeals court upheld a three-year prison sentence for Mubarak and his sons on graft charges. The sentence took into account time served. Both his sons were freed.
