Light transport plane crashes in Russia, one dead

A light utility transport plane crashed in Russia's Yaroslavl region Saturday and the pilot was killed, the Itar-Tass news agency reported.

The Emergency Situations Ministry received a report at 2:40 p.m. local time (1040 GMT) of the crash of an An-2 plane in the village of Staroselye in the Yaroslavl region.

Itar-Tass said the pilot died and his body has been recovered, citing sources from the regional law enforcement agencies.

A search is under way as a second person might have been on board.

"A rapid response team of local firefighters and rescuers from the nearby city of Rybinsk, as well as an ambulance and a fire engine, has rushed to the site," Itar-Tass quoted the ministry as saying.

Preliminary reports show that the privately-owned plane was making an unauthorized flight when it crashed.

"It took off from a mothballed airfield and fell down immediately afterwards near the village of Staroselye and caught fire," the police said.
