Long-distance pussy crosses the US and earns a flight home
WILLOW, a pet cat that went missing in the western US state of Colorado five years ago, has been found wandering in the east coast's Manhattan, New York.
The pet is now awaiting a flight to a reunion with its former owners, according to an animal center spokesman.
Workers at a New York-based pet shelter traced Willow the cat back to a family in Colorado, thanks to a microchip embedded in the animal's neck.
A resident found the brown, black and white cat prowling the streets on the east side of Manhattan.
According to Richard Gentles, a spokesman for Animal Care & Control of New York, care workers have no idea who was taking care of the cat.
However, Gentles speculated that the animal did not travel halfway across the country on its own.
He said: "The cat was in very good condition - clean, a little chunky. So obviously someone was taking care of her."
Willow belongs to a Colorado family called Squires, and the animal apparently ran away five years ago during a home renovation project, according to Gentles.
The Squires could not be reached for comment this week.
Animal Care & Control plans to fly the cat back to the Squires, dependent on the animal passing a required screening test for communicable disease and the center ensuring it is healthy enough to travel.
