Mafia leaders target of Italian crackdown
ITALIAN authorities are rounding up scores of people involved in a drug trafficking ring, including senior figures of the powerful 'Ndrangheta mafia, investigative sources said yesterday.
Police have issued 50 arrest warrants, many of which have already been carried out, the sources said. The arrests are part of an investigation into a drug trafficking network that imported drugs into Italy from South America, the sources said. More than 1,000 kg of cocaine, heroin and hashish have been seized in the investigation.
The head of a local 'Ndrangheta clan and a top associate of another mafia boss are among those for whom arrest warrants have been issued, the sources said.
Analysts say the southern Calabria region's 'Ndrangheta is one of the most powerful organized crime groups in Italy and dominates the drug trade in Europe.
