Magnitude 5.0 quake strikes off coast of S. Philippines

AN earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of the southern Philippine province of Davao Occidental province at 1:24pm, local time on Thursday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology ( PHIVOLCS) said.

PHIVOLCS said the epicenter of the quake was at 141 kilometers southeast of Sarangani town with a depth of 6 km.

No casualties and losses have been reported so far. PHIVOLCS said it does not expect aftershocks.

The Philippines sits in the so called "Pacific Ring of Fire," an area where continental plates collide, producing frequent earthquakes and volcanic activities.
