Malaysia government urged to act against maids abuse cases
Malaysia government has been urged to take actions to guarantee the safety and well-being of foreign maids, after some 100 women from neighboring countries were found cooped up in a maids agency during the weekend.
A senior Indonesia diplomat warned his fellow countrymen not to work in Malaysia, citing low pay and security issues.
"They are asking for Indonesian maids but they cannot protect them," Indonesian embassy social and cultural affairs minister- counsellor Suryana Sastradiredja was quoted as saying by the local New Straits Times as saying today.
Over 100 foreign women, mostly from Indonesia, were rescued in the port city of Klang last weekend. According to Malaysian police, the women were duped into the country for other jobs but ended up as maids.
Suryana urged Malaysian authorities to take tough action against agencies that mistreat maids.
Malaysian Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam has called for a maximum penalty against the responsible.
Meanwhile, Suryana said Indonesia will launch its own investigation on how the maids were smuggled into Malaysia as he believed "there are parties in Indonesia who are involved the human trafficking." The two countries will joint hand in tackling the crime, he said.
The Indonesian embassy in Malaysia issued an advisory to Jakarta in March to suspend the sending of maids to Malaysia following reports of two Indonesian maids were allegedly abused by their employers. Recent cases of two Indonesian women raped by police and employer respectively have again raised tensions between the two neighboring countries.
