Man arrested for bomb plot at Detroit federal office

US authorities arrested a Michigan man yesterday for trying to bomb a federal building that houses the FBI's Detroit offices.

Gary Mikulich, 42, who has frequently complained about the FBI, was arrested in northern Michigan after authorities connected him to a tool bag he allegedly stuffed with a bomb and planted in the Detroit building in February.

The bag was found on February 26 by an FBI employee and reported to the Federal Protective Service, which provides security for some federal buildings. It was not screened until March 18, however, and a metal box with wires, electrical components and dense masses was found inside.

The Detroit Police Department Bomb Squad detonated a charge to render the device safe, which set off a secondary explosion and sent the box flying about 10 feet, according to an FBI affidavit filed yesterday.

A piece of a timer was found in the debris. The FBI said the tool bag is sold exclusively by Home Depot, which searched its records and found nine people had bought the bag and timer at the same time since October.

Surveillance footage showed Mikulich making a cash purchase of the two items at a Home Depot store in Iron Mountain, Michigan, on Feb. 14, according to the complaint.

Mikulich's car was spotted by a sheriff's deputy about 80 km from Detroit and 725 km from his home at 1 am the night before the bag was discovered, the affidavit said. The officer did not stop the vehicle.

Mikulich has frequently complained to the FBI in Detroit for murdering his father and thousands of other people, prosecutors said. The FBI's Detroit office is in the federal building, as is the office of Democratic Senator Carl Levin.

Mikulich was charged with one count of trying to damage or destroy a federal building with explosives, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison if convicted.

The security guard who initially received the bag was a private contractor and has been suspended until further notice, according to an FPS official.
