Man arrested in bomb plot had tried to flee
US authorities have arrested Faisal Shahzad, a US citizen, in connection with the failed bombing attempt in New York's Times Square as he tried to flee the United States, Attorney General Eric Holder said today.
Shahzad was arrested at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport as he tried to board a flight to Dubai, Holder said.
"This investigation is ongoing, as are our attempts to gather useful intelligence, and we continue to pursue a number of leads," Holder said in a hastily called news conference. "But it's clear that the intent behind this terrorist act was to kill Americans."
