Man detained for 2 unattended backpacks near Boston Marathon finish line
Boston police confirmed Tuesday evening a man was detained for connection with two unattended backpacks left near this year's Marathon finish line.
The Boston Police Department twitted this confirmation one year after two homemade bombs exploded near the finish line of the 2013 Boston Marathon, killing three and injuring more than 260 others .
The department also said on its twitter account that police disrupted the backpacks at the finish line "for precautionary reasons."
Police spokesman David Estrada said police detonated one of the backpacks at about 9 p.m. local time (1300GMT), and then the other shortly after 9:30 p.m. local time (1330GMT), the Boston Globe reported.
Earlier Tuesday evening, police asked pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area in and around the Boston Marathon Finish Line and the bomb squad is still on scene, the Boston Police Department twitted.
Families of last year's bombing victims, survivors, first responders, local people and public officials gathered in the city on Tuesday to mark the first anniversary of the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings.
