Masked men ransack Shell gas project in Ireland
IRELAND'S police force says 15 masked men armed with steel pipes, chains and nail-studded clubs have ransacked a Shell pipeline project.
Police say the vandals smashed security fences and hijacked a construction vehicle overnight today at Shell's site on the remote Glengad beach of County Mayo's Atlantic coast.
They say unarmed security guards retreated when confronted by the attackers, and one guard suffered an arm injury when struck by a steel pipe. No one has been arrested for the attack.
The government and environmental authorities have approved Shell's plan to pipe natural gas from an untapped field 80 kilometers (50 miles) offshore. But Shell has spent years battling opponents both in courts and on the ground in Mayo.
