Merkel Surprised
GERMAN Chancellor Angela Merkel admitted she was caught off guard by the resignation of her popular defense minister - a man she had ardently defended.
Merkel had backed Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg in a plagiarism row, using some of her own political capital.
"This morning I was surprised when Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg asked to speak with me by phone," Merkel said.
Merkel was touring the CeBIT computer trade fair in Hanover.
