Minister Seeks Tough Rules
FRANCE'S health minister wants the European Union to stiffen its rules on medical devices following the breast implant scandal.
Xavier Bertrand is calling for "an unprecedented change" in EU rules to put authorizations for medical devices, including silicone breast implants, on a par with rules for prescription medicines.
Breast implants by the now-defunct Poly Implant Prothese company were made with cheap industrial silicone instead of medical grade silicone. Many countries banned the implants last year after more than 1,000 women in France suffered ruptures.
French authorities are investigating possible links to cancer from the gel used in PIP implants after a woman died in 2010.
