Moore insists not racist over Elba remark

James Bond legend Roger Moore has insisted that he said nothing racist about fellow British actor Idris Elba 鈥 tipped to play the superspy next 鈥 in a French magazine interview.
The 87-year-old star, who played the suave British agent in seven films from 1973 to 1985, insisted his meaning had been lost in translation.
鈥淎n interview I gave to Paris Match implies I said something racist about Idris Elba. That is simply untrue,鈥 Moore wrote on Twitter, using the hashtag 鈥淟ost in translation.鈥
鈥淲hen a journalist asks if 鈥楤ond should be English鈥 and you agree, then quotes you saying it about Idris Elba it鈥檚 out of context,鈥 he added.
Reproductions of the interview have led to Moore being blasted by Twitter users.
In the interview, Moore was talking about the different actors who have played agent 007 on screen.
In the 23 official Bond films to date, Bond has been played in turn by Sean Connery, George Lazenby, Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Brosnan and Daniel Craig, who is shooting 鈥淪pectre,鈥 due out in November.
In a translation of the quotes printed in French in Paris Match, Moore said: 鈥淭hough James has been played by a Scot, a Welshman, an Irishman, I think he should be English-English. It鈥檚 nonetheless an interesting idea, but unrealistic.
鈥淪ome years ago, I said Cuba Gooding Jr would make an excellent Bond but it was a joke!鈥
Benjamin Locoge, in charge of Paris Match鈥檚 culture section, said the recording 鈥渂acks up that Roger Moore鈥檚 words have been faithfully transcribed.鈥
鈥淭he journalist is certain about the term 鈥楨nglish-English:鈥 he said it like that, it鈥檚 on the tape,鈥 he added.
鈥淩oger Moore implies it would be difficult to have a black James Bond in the sense that one cannot imagine General de Gaulle being played by a black actor and James Brown by a white (actor).鈥
