More charges for killer masseur

A SOUTH Korean masseur who confessed to strangling eight women has been indicted on additional charges of burning alive his wife and mother-in-law, prosecutors said yesterday.

Prosecutors said Kang Ho-sun, 38, set fire to his mother-in-law's home, killing both women to claim insurance money in October 2005.

Kang has admitted killing eight women ?? office workers, karaoke bar employees and university students ?? after abducting them between September 2006 and December 2008, prosecutors said.

Yesterday prosecutors added two counts of murder and arson in addition to charges for the other slayings.

Kang, who worked as a sports massage therapist, has denied the new allegations, saying the blaze was accidental and that he barely escaped. He had sought additional insurance coverage days before the fire.

Prosecutors said Kang's statements have been inconsistent and concluded he set the fire intentionally with kerosene. He received about 480 million won (US$318,510) in insurance money from four insurance companies in April 2007.

Investigators also found the DNA of two other women on a hoe at Kang's farm and are looking into the possibility he may have killed them as well.
