More snow woes for storm-hit Washington

THE second major snowstorm in a week swept up the east coast of the United States yesterday, piling on already snowbound Washington, where most federal government offices have been shut down since last week, and moving on to New York City.

The storm dumped more than 25 centimeters of snow on parts of the Washington area that had been hit with about a meter of snow in a weekend blizzard. Baltimore reported a record snowfall.

New York, which managed to avoid last week's blizzard, was not so lucky yesterday.

Flakes were coming down fast during the morning commute, and the National Weather Service issued blizzard warnings and predicted 25 to 40 centimeters of snow. Airlines canceled hundreds of flights at New York-area airports, and 1.1 million students enjoyed a day off school.

Snow was falling from northern Virginia to Connecticut by early yesterday after crawling out of the Midwest, where the storm canceled hundreds of flights. In Chicago, a pickup truck plowing snow backed into and killed a 71-year-old woman.
