More than 20 Chinese missing after attack in Sudan

MORE than 20 Chinese nationals have gone missing after an attack by rebels against a camp belonging to a Chinese company operating at South Kordofan area in Sudan, Chinese Embassy in Khartoum announced yesterday.

"The Chinese Embassy has started implementation of the emergency mechanism to follow up the issue and make contacts with the Sudanese authorities in this respect," an official at the Chinese embassy told Xinhua.

An armed group under Sudan People's Liberation Army attacked yesterday a site of a Chinese company operating in the field of roads in South Kordofan state, the governor said.

The official SUNA news agency quoted the governor of South Kordofan state, Ahmed Haroun, as saying that a group of rebels launched an attack on the site of the Chinese company on the circular road between Al-Abbasiya and Rashad localities near al-Mugarah area.

"This attack targets the security and stability of these companies and tends to halt the big development projects in the state. Everybody is aware that the Chinese company is operating on a vital sector of the circular road which has been a dream for the people of the state, particularly at the eastern part, for tens of years," he added.

The governor further explained that the armed forces have immediately and firmly dealt with the situation, noting that the situation needs a high level of wisdom so that none of the 35 people working in the company, most of them Chinese, would get affected.
