Muammar Gaddafi captured in Sirte: NTC official
LIBYA'S fallen leader Muammar Gaddafi was injured and captured today by fighters of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) in Sirte, a NTC field commander told Xinhua.
The commander, Momhemed Buras Ali Al-Maknee, said a group of fighters from the western Libyan city of Misrata captured Gaddafi in Sirte, who was severely injured. However, there are also reports alleging the fallen leader had died from his wounds.
Gaddafi was allegedly captured before a military helicopter had managed to taken him way, he said.
Libyan television also reported that Gaddafi has been seized, but the report has not yet been officially confirmed by the NTC.
Mahmoud Shamman, the information minister of the interim government, failed to confirm the news, but told CNN that "a big fish" had been captured.
"It's a big victory for the Libyan people ... it's a big fish," Shamman said in the capital city of Tripoli.
The 69 year-old leader, whose forces was driven out of capital Tripoli by the now ruling NTC on August 23, and had been "leading resistance" against his foes from an undisclosed place in Libya for the past months, according to his spokesman.
On June 27, the International Criminal Court (ICC) had issued arrest warrants for Gaddafi, his son Saif al-Islam and intelligence chief Abdullah al-Senussi on charges of crimes against humanity, and on September 9, the international police agency INTERPOL issued Red Notice for the three as requested by ICC.
